Howe School Trustee

A member of the Board of Trustees of the Howe School, created under the will of Dr. Zadok Howe (d. 1851), who left the bulk of his estate to an incorporated board charged with building and running an academy in Billerica. The first seven trustees were named at the founding, and the board was incorporated while the school building (now the Old Howe School) went up in 1852. Later vacancies were filled by appointment of the Judge of Probate. The trustees ran the school as a private academy, admitting town pupils free after 1891 under state high school law, until 1914, when the town took over the high school; the town then rented the building and bought it in 1920. The board continued afterward as trustees of the Howe School Fund, paying income toward the town's schools.
